Members of our team have had the pleasure of working with the Refugee Council since 2008, during which time they have been on an almighty, compelling journey.

2008 saw a marked change in government spending policy and the Refugee Council saw their predominantly statutory funded balance sheet almost entirely disappear.

Given the vital work they do, this required an urgent and critical rethink. Acting quickly, the organisation rebuilt their board to reflect their new organisational priorities, invested strategically in their fundraising team, and worked hard to safeguard the people they work for.

And what a different picture we look at today. We see a Refugee Council with a strategic, heavily diversified funding mix, restored to 2008 levels. They have recently received a generous, targeted gift, enabling them to heavily invest in a digital transformation project, which will allow them to dynamically engage with a rapidly evolving fundraising landscape in the years to come.

All of this with the added bonus that the lack of government funding gives them complete autonomy and they are safeguarded from the future whims of politics.

Which is important, because their work has never been more so than it is today…

The Role

Essentially, in another organisation, Vicky would be Individual Giving Lead and you would be Individual Giving Manager. She is looking for someone who can work across operational implementation and donor development within all public fundraising areas, with support of the wider team.

This isn’t to say Vicky just wants to do strategy, but this is a new role because there is simply too much to do for her to be able to deliver the work, support the team, and implement the new strategy that is being made possible due to investment from the recent legacy.

If you’re a talented fundraiser with a proven track record of delivery in the individual giving / public fundraising arena, looking for a role where you can work alongside a talented leader and develop your strategic experience. You can find a worse springboard for your career than this one.

The Team

Led by the inimitable Vicky Hales, who is exactly the type of Manager I would want to work for – smart, ambitious, and invested in the nurturing and development of her fundraisers you will be part of a creative and talented 6-person team.

The team cover IG, supporter care, community, legacy, and in-memory. The entire programme currently generates £2m and, whilst they are in the test-and-learn phase of their strategy, has a modest acquisition target of £200k.
