Spotlight on Ecocide International

It’s World Environment Day: a United Nations-led initiative designed to raise awareness of the need to protect and preserve our planet.

This is exactly what one of our fabulous clients, Ecocide International works tirelessly to do.

So we’re putting them under the spotlight.

Why does Stop Ecocide International (SEI) exist?

Climate change and ecosystem collapse are the greatest existential threats of our time.

And ecocide - the mass destruction of nature by humans - is to blame.

Harmful activities such as fracking, mining, industrial livestock farming, and mineral extraction have ravaged the environment, irreparably damaging ecosystems, and putting the future of humanity and the natural environment at risk.

And yet, in many parts of the world, no one is being held to account.

Stop Ecocide International (a non-profit company limited by guarantee) is the driving force behind a global movement to establish a law of ecocide to make the systematic destruction of nature an international crime.

What does the charity do?

  • Advocacy

The charity’s primary focus is to activate and develop global support for an international crime of ecocide. And they collaborate with diplomats, heads of state, politicians, lawyers, corporate leaders, NGOs, faith groups, and grassroots campaigners to this end.

To date, the charity has secured 50,000+ endorsing signatories from civil society and faith groups, and the backing of a host of influential figures, including Antonio Guterres (UN Secretary-General), Greta Thunberg (Environmental Activist), Pope Francis (Bishop of Rome and head of the Catholic Church) and Frans Timmermans, (First Vice President of the European Commission)

  • Education

SEI also hosts workshops and events throughout the year to raise awareness of the consequences of ecocide.

Stop Ecocide Foundation

Stop Ecocide Foundation is SEI’s charitable entity.

It was created in the Netherlands in 2019 to support the movement. And it’s the main fundraising and commissioning vehicle for their work.

In 2020, the Foundation made history by commissioning a panel of renowned international lawyers to draw up a legal definition of ecocide: “Unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and widespread or long-term damage to the environment being caused by those acts.”

The definition is the starting point for conversations about ecocide law amongst governments around the world.

Featured Job

Stop Ecocide International has made great strides in its work to criminalise ecocide and is now operating at the highest level.

They’re looking for an experienced fundraiser to develop and implement a long-term philanthropic strategy to help them achieve their mission ‘to have ecocide recognised as an international crime at the International Criminal Court (ICC).’

If you’re a skilled networker who thrives on cultivating relationships with high-value funders across the major foundation and UHNWI landscape and share SEI’s passion for the planet, this could be the role for you.
